What we learned in the later stages of our case study.

After months of hardwork, our team reached the near end of the project. We still have more work & testing to do since we know our work as designers/researchers will never truly be finished.  Here's a few things we learned:

1. Ensuring accessibility is crucial for a user-friendly experience. In the beginning stages of our project we knew that accessibility was important for our application.  However, while creating our final designs we realised that some pages could be challenging for less technically savvy users.  We became too focused on aesthetically pleasing features and we needed to focus on usability.

2. Including more recipes for users following different diets. In our application we included recipes catered towards vegans and vegetarians, with some being ketogenic. We want go back include recipes for users on paleo and pescatarian diets, practicing intermittent fasting  and many more options.

3. Taking different  approaches throughout our user testing & research . Throughout our user research process we were able to get multiple forms of feedback & suggestions from different groups of people. We thought that we should also conduct research in

multiple different local gyms. This could help our application align more closely with the needs, preferences, and behaviors of its target audience.

Thank you for viewing :) 🍎

CONCLUSIONS & LESSONS LEARNED

MID FIDELITY WIREFRAMING

Improvements on health data and more consideration of community

After user testing, many participants had concerns on the amount of accountability the application would offer. We decided to make multiple improvements while moving onto high fidelity.

PROBLEM

The United States is currently battling an obesity epidemic.

The escalating prevalence of overweight and obesity in the United States poses a significant health risk, contributing to chronic diseases and escalating healthcare costs. Urgent intervention is needed to address the root causes, including sedentary lifestyles and poor dietary habits, and implement effective strategies to promote healthier living. As advocates for nutrition and fitness, We thought this would be an excellent app to create for others like me as well others wanting to better their lifestyle.

The competition did not have desired features for users.

COMPETITVE ANALYSIS

While many fitness and nutrition apps offer valuable features, there are certain areas where they might fall short. Lack of wanted features for users often end in users abandoning the app.

WHITE PAPER RESEARCH

Americans have an ongoing struggle with health

Beginning with white paper research, we began to draw from research articles on the topic of health, diets and education.  One team member came across 3 alarming statistics from the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion.

Based on the responses, almost every single person expressed their desire to lose weight and to use an application that has a simple user interface . Others wanted the application to include sections for caloric information and a community section so users could interact with friends and like minded individuals.

Our potential users are new to fitness, want to lose weight and need a supportive community.

THE MAIN INSIGHT

The goal of this application is to empower individuals in achieving and maintaining optimal health by providing personalized, user-friendly tools for nutrition and fitness.

A platform created to empower individuals

THE SOLUTION

Our potential users are new to fitness, want to lose weight

USER RESEARCH

I was able to get responses from 15 individuals that expressed interest in a new nutrition and fitness application.  Our team wanted to find people of different ages, physical & technological experiences, and future goals. We asked them the questions below to find trends and figure out what we should include in our application.

A simple design can encourage users to explore and interact with the app regularly.

Due to multiple complaints of applications having complicated interfaces, we wanted to make the user navigation as simplistic as possible. Complicated interfaces may intimidate users, leading to frustration and potential abandonment of the application. We wanted to ensure that the application is accessible to a wider range of users.

SIMPLISTIC INTERFACES

We faced challenges in identifying the optimal layout for this application.

LOW-FIDELITY WIREFRAMING

While sketching our application we thought about the best layout and the aspects that each person expressed they disliked.  We faced challenges in designing an engaging layout with personalization features. To find a solution, we revisited our competitive analysis, analyzed user reviews, and discovered that a straightforward layout was crucial. We created multiple mockups and proceeded to user testing.
